Disrupting & Reorienting Restitution

Branding, Web Design

Role: Visual Designer

Deliverables: Comprehensive visual identity and website design

Duration: 8 weeks

Overview

Disrupting & Reorienting Restitution (DRR) is a collective that embraces a multi-disciplinary approach to amplifying voices from Africa and the Diaspora in the restitution debate.

I created DRR’s visual identity, ensuring it resonates with diverse audiences while communicating the collective’s mission and values.

The Need

As a new initiative, DRR needed a cohesive brand identity to build trust, raise awareness and partner with artists, cultural professionals and advocacy groups dedicated to advancing restitution and cultural justice.

DRR needed a visual system that would:

  • Reflect the collective’s transformative and inclusive ethos.

  • Stand out in the crowded landscape of cultural advocacy.

  • Maintain consistency across platforms, from print materials to digital interfaces.

Process

I conducted research, including stakeholder interviews and competitor analysis to understand DRR’s mission and target audience, which informed design direction. I developed multiple logo concepts, a cohesive colour palette and typography, creating a dynamic visual identity that was integrated into a responsive website.

Logo Design

After exploring three logo concepts, I decided on Concept 2. The rotated "R" symbolises DRR’s shift in perspective and its transformative approach to the restitution debate.

Brand Kit

Building on the logo direction, I crafted a colour palette, typography and assets that reflect DRR’s bold, inclusive and transformative brand identity.

Impact

I successfully launched DRR’s visual identity in time for their inaugural public event, attracting 129 registered attendees from 36 countries across Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia through the DRR website.

DRR’s cohesive branding helped secure partnerships with international institutions and advocacy groups.
